Simmering Republicans

David Broder relates the story of simmering Republicans who do not like how the religious right have taken over the party. They dislike the idea of Nancy Pelosi becoming speaker, so even though they may be likely pickings for the Democratic Party, they refuse to switch and may sit out this election.

Catholic Democrats are in the same boat, as well as recently Democratic Catholics who switched over to the GOP because they were taken in by the Republican attempts to enact a partial birth abortion ban and the Clinton vetoes of the same.

Neither of these groups is comfortable in the party of George W. Bush and Jerry Falwell. This is the consitutuency that a Christian Libertarian Party hopes to attract. For those who believe that there is a nexus between freedom and compassion, dive on in - the water is fine.
